Willow

Willow is based on a tree growing in Culpeper, VA that I would often ride my bike to as a child. It grows on the side of a creek that used to border farmland. almost 40 years later this tree still stands but is flanked by subdivisions and a main roadway. The creek is still there but the farmland is long gone. Willows represent a calm sadness that brewed under the surface of my childhood. Raised in an alcoholic home, as an only child, I often found solace in the outdoors and nature. This Weeping Willow tree is was a place of quiet contentment for a young child.

Made from electrical wires, plastic bag, bike tire, beads, broken glass, a shower curtain, twisty ties, vinyl records, rubber bands, ripped canvas, telephone wire, foam, swimsuit mesh, newspaper clippings, used fishing line, and fabric scraps.
