Even the most mundane materials can be reused and manipulated into something beautiful

Muninn

Muninn is titled after Odin’s Raven. This raven represents memory, and the image is of Thor’s Hammer (Mjolnir) in Bryce Canyon National Park. To escape Covid and 2020, my family took an epic road trip across the United States. We drove from Virginia to California and back. One of our favorite destinations was Bryce Canyon National Park.

During this trip out west, I brought along a small urn with my mom’s ashes. I chose to sprinkle her ashes along the way. Everywhere I released her on this trip a raven would appear and stay with us for a minute or two. During our time in Utah and Bryce Canyon we were followed by one particular raven that stopped to caw/talk to us multiple times. For hours this raven stayed with us while I sprinkled a little bit of ashes at a time. This was my moment with my mom in a faraway place she had always wanted to visit. This piece is my memory of a moment with my mom. This is my Muninn.

This canvas was found on a street corner with a gash. The raven is made from vinyl records, plastic coated cardboard, rusted chicken wire, black plastic, a paper clip, and electrical wire. The hoodoos are made from plastic bags and bubble wrap.
